Snoring occurs when your air passage is blocked or closed which causes the free flow of air to cease. The obstruction causes your soft tissue to vibrate and the snoring sound is generated. Unlike occasional snoring, Sleep Apnea is a serious condition that affects millions of people and has serious health implications. Sleep Apnea causes poor air circulation during sleep and you stop breathing multiple times. Sleep Apnea is regularly overlooked as simple snoring but the two are totally separate. When you suffer from sleep apnea, you will regularly awaken feeling tired, irritable and with a sore throat or dry mouth.
Without treatment sleep apnea can lead to greater health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke or even death. Excessive weight and obesity is the leading cause of sleep apnea but having enlarged tonsils or adenoids, a narrow airway, smoking or the use of alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers are other risk factors.
